The Whole Point

Acrylic on canvas, 2018 This semi-abstract painting features a very important place in my life. I'm sure it holds significance for many people, as it is a unique and breathtakingly beautiful place - The Raven, Wexford. Specifically Raven Point, which juts out into the sea directly across from Wexford town's quayfront. This is where my husband proposed to me in 2014. It's a place I had many reoccurring dreams about throughout my life, before I had ever been there. Four years later, it was the view from the hospital room where my Mum sadly passed away. It's also the beach where my Dad and I escaped for an hour to clear our heads during that harrowing week. If you ever get the chance to visit, expect sandy beaches running parallel to walkable sand dunes, again parallel to beautiful forest... A Wexford 3-in-1 without the curry sauce.

A Proud Moment

Acrylic on canvas, 2026 This solitary puffin stands proudly and confidently, facing into the wind just after sunset on Wexford's Great Saltee Island. I've been fascinated by these creatures since early childhood, when I'd admire the logo on my Puffin books. Sidenote - I've always had a thing for logos and have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Graphic Design. It's funny how patterns emerge over the course of a lifetime. I'd always wanted to see puffins in person and finally did while celebrating my 31st birthday with a daytrip to Great Saltee. What a privilege it was to witness these beautiful seabirds in their natural habitat on a warm summer's day with family. It was just two weeks before the first anniversary of my Mum's passing, and about a week before I happily discovered I was pregnant with my eldest son; making it all the more special a memory. I was struck by how small puffins are in reality. They have such a proud and stout stature. Did you know their beaks glow in UV light?

The Artist

Based in Ireland, Katie Kirwan’s visual art practice is deeply rooted in her appreciation for nature. Her contemporary paintings tend towards semi-abstract, with layers upon layers of thick, textured colour.

She has been practicing art throughout her life, under academic guidance and her own exploration. She studied colour and composition extensively as part of her Bachelor of Arts degree in Design.

Her work serves as a bridge between raw natural force and refined modern aesthetics. Exploring the intersection of memory and nature, these paintings capture fleeting moments of changing light but also lasting memories and emotions. The result is elegant and as meaningful as the moments that inspired them. Moments that many can relate to - proposals, births, deaths, new homes, new beginnings and facing into life's challenges head on.
